“Bell” from a Moscow court: It permanently removed the licenses of the newspapers Novaya Gazeta and Novaya raskaz-gazeta

The appeal of the newspaper’s management was rejected on Tuesday (7/2) by the regional court court her Moscow and permanently cancel it circulation license of the printed edition of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta” and of the medium “Novaya raskaz-gazeta” (New narrative-newspaper) as reported on its website by the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta Europe” published in Latvia.

The Basmani court had revoked the license of these two media outlets in September, after which the newspaper’s management appealed this decision. In the same month, the Supreme Court revoked the license of the website of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”. Later the websites of both these media were blocked, because they were considered to be a “mirror” of the previously published NO magazine.

The reason for the withdrawal of the license of the newspapers “Novaya Gazeta” and “Novaya raskaz-gazeta” was the non-compliance with formal procedures: “Novaya Gazeta” did not present to the telecommunications regulatory authority Roskomnadzor the updated version of its statutes, in which they had introduced minor changes in 2006, while “Novaya raskaz-gazeta” in the view of the regulatory authority had not exceeded one year of circulation.

The Novaya Gazeta newspaper’s website had its license removed after two warnings from Russian regulator Roskomnadzor for failing to flag “foreign agent” in several of its publications.

Last March, the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta” suspended the operation of its website and its printed version after two warnings from Roskomnadzor. Then its journalists, who left Russia, published their own newspaper, “Novaya Gazeta Europe”.

The director of the “Novaya Gazeta” newspaper, Dmitry Muratov, has been awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.
