Bell Hooks writer dies at age 69 in the United States

The American writer and theorist Bell Hooks died this Wednesday (15) at the age of 69, according to a statement published by the family on social networks.

“Gloria Jean Watkins’ family is very saddened to report the death of our beloved sister on December 15, 2021. Hooks’ baptismal name – who signed with the pseudonym “bell hooks”, in lowercase.

“The family is honored with the numerous awards, honors and international fame Gloria has received for her work as a poet, author, feminist, teacher, cultural critic and social activist. We are proud to call her sister, friend, confidant and influencer”, complements the statement.

The family also says it will “soon” announce a ceremony to celebrate the theorist’s legacy.

Hooks was born in 1952 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. She graduated in English from Stanford University and earned a Masters degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Ph.D. in Literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz.

In 1981, Hooks published his first book, called “And Am I Not a Woman? Black women and feminism”, in which she analyzes the contemporary feminist movement based on the speech of Sojourner Truth, an enslaved black woman who, in 1857, already free, pointed out inconsistencies in an assembly of white suffragette women that year.

Throughout her career, Hooks’ studies culminated in more than 40 books on race, feminism and education, as well as social and cultural relations. He also wrote and published poetry and autobiographical texts, approaching how the concept of love also crossed the social themes in which he focused.

The university where Hooks taught released a note lamenting the writer’s passing. She served as a resident teacher in Appalachian Studies, Native American peoples.

“Berea University is grateful for your contributions to campus and will celebrate your life and legacy through the Bell hooks Center, which opened in the fall of 2021. The bell hooks Institute at Berea University will continue to be a valuable venue for your life’s work , reminding people that everything in life is about love”, says the report.
