The capital of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, has almost perfect air quality. 9 times worse than recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
This Thursday (5), the city recorded 43.6 µg/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter) of PM2.5 particulate matter, according to the Swiss air monitoring platform, IQAir.
This pollutant is used as a parameter for air quality and data from Belo Horizonte (MG) classifies the city’s air as “unhealthy for vulnerable groups” Pollution is expected to remain at this level until next week.
The worsening air quality is due to smoke from forest fires in the North and Central-West regions of the country, combined with the heat wave and low rainfall. Belo Horizonte has been 140 days without rain significant — the last one was recorded on April 18th of this year.
The Municipal Civil Defense issued a warning low air humidity, which should be around 10% . The city is also facing high temperatures, with a maximum of 35ºC for this Thursday (5).
The expectation is that the intensification of the transport of moisture from the ocean to the interior of the continent should reduce the intense heat in the central east of Minas Gerais, including the capital, according to the State Civil Defense. According to the agency, 137 mining cities are in an abnormal situation due to drought .
At this level of air pollution, the recommendation is to reduce physical exercise and outdoor activities, close windows to avoid outside air and use air purifiers in homes. The most vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and children, should wear protective masks outside the home.
