Belo Horizonte is the only capital in the Southeast that does not apply the 4th dose against Covid

The city of Belo Horizonte (MG) is the only capital in the Southeast that does not provide the second booster dose, or fourth dose, for people under 40 years old.

Residents of the mining capital aged between 18 and 39 years and without comorbidities are waiting for the vaccine. The estimated population that is eligible to take the fourth dose in Belo Horizonte is approximately 719 thousand people.

Contrary to the Belo Horizonte scenario, other capitals in the Southeast have been vaccinating since mid-2022. Rio de Janeiro made the second additional dose available to the population over 18 years old in July. In São Paulo, the complementary vaccination schedule started to be offered in August. In Vitória, the fourth dose has been available to the entire population of legal age for at least four months.

THE CNN consulted the Municipal Health Secretariat of Belo Horizonte, which stated that the Ministry of Health and the State Secretariat of Health of Minas Gerais, so far, have not formally indicated the administration of the fourth dose for the public between 18 and 39 years old .

According to the secretariat, the Minas Gerais municipalities that are vaccinating this public use remaining doses of vaccine batches initially intended for the population aged 40 years or more. “To summon this public in BH, it is ‘essential’ to send new shipments of the adult Pfizer vaccine to the municipality”, argues the folder.

THE CNN consulted the Ministry of Health about sending new doses to Belo Horizonte and awaits return.
