The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, was discharged this Thursday (02) after “successfully” undergoing prostate surgery.
“I have just left Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital,” wrote the prime minister in a publication on X. The hospital where the procedure was carried out is in Jerusalem.
Netanyahu’s office said the politician was in good condition and fully conscious following the completion of his prostate surgery.
The procedure took place after Netanyahu, 75, was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection resulting from a benign enlarged prostate.
The medical incident comes at a time of negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
On December 25, Netanyahu refuted a Hamas accusation that imposing conditions for an agreement were delaying the conclusion of negotiations.
“The terrorist organization Hamas continues to lie, is reneging on understandings that have already been reached and continues to hinder negotiations”, claimed the prime minister.
He added that Israel will continue relentless efforts to return hostages in Gaza to their homes.
Understand the conflict in the Gaza Strip
Israel has carried out intense airstrikes in the Gaza Strip since last year, after Hamas invaded the country and killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli counts. Furthermore, the radical group holds dozens of hostages.
Hamas does not recognize Israel as a state and claims Israeli territory for Palestine.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly promised to destroy Hamas’ military capabilities and recover people detained in Gaza.
In addition to the air offensive, the Israeli Army carries out land incursions into Palestinian territory. This caused much of Gaza’s population to be displaced.
The UN and several humanitarian institutions have warned of a catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, with a lack of food, medicine and the spread of diseases.
The Israeli population is constantly protesting against Netanyahu, accusing the prime minister of failing to reach a ceasefire agreement so that the hostages can be released.
