Berlin, Paris and Kiev call on Moscow to withdraw from border with Ukraine

Urge Russia to withdraw additional forces gathered on its border with Ukraine German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Presidents of France and Ukraine Emanuel Macron and Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the gathering. The goal is to achieve “de-escalation” in the region.

The three leaders, in a teleconference earlier today, “shared his concerns about the increase in Russian forces on the border with Ukraine and the illegally annexed Crimea “and at the same time demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops, according to a joint statement issued by the German chancellor.

Merkel and Macron reiterated their support for “Ukraine’s independence, national sovereignty and territorial integrity”, but also said that “implementation on both sides” was necessary for the implementation of the Minsk Agreements.

They also assured that “They will continue their efforts within the framework of the Normandy group”, ie the quadripartite, with the participation of Russia.

Zelensky, who met with President Macron in Paris before the conference call, assured that he was ready for quadripartite talks in which Russian President Vladimir Putin would also take part.

According to the APE-MPE, he believes that it is possible to have peace talks and that a separate summit between the Russian president and his American counterpart, Joe Biden, would help resolve certain issues.

The Ukrainian president added that he hoped that the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine would be revived next week.

“We expect a revival (of the ceasefire) after the meeting of advisers” of the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France scheduled for Monday, Zelensky told reporters, referring to the clashes between Ukrainian forces and of pro-Russian separatists who have intensified since the beginning of the year.
