Criminal investigators and prosecutors in Berlin were studying a device found and defused in a residential building housing Russian news agency staff in the Steglitz area of the city on Saturday, police said, according to Reuters.
The device was found on Friday and investigators are examining how dangerous it was and for whom it was intended, said a spokesman for the Berlin police, answering a relevant question. He added that there will be further updates later on Saturday.
The Russian embassy in Berlin said a bottle had been thrown out of an apartment building window on Friday night and that an improvised explosive device had been found during the search, which it said German pyrotechnicians had located and defused.
Russia’s state-run RIA news agency reported that journalists were staying in the apartment building.
Russia’s foreign ministry on Saturday called on German and other European Union and NATO officials to take steps to protect Russian journalists and their families abroad.
“We see this as a direct consequence of the harassment of the Russian media and its agents in the West,” he said in a statement. “The politicized decision to disconnect the Russian media from the frequencies in the European Union was a precursor to their physical intimidation, even to their extermination.”
Video footage broadcast by the RIA on Friday night showed a blocked road and a man in a protective suit, who, according to the agency, was one of the pyrotechnicians working to defuse the bomb.
Various Russian broadcasters have been banned in Western countries after being accused of spreading propaganda in connection with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The state-controlled Russian agencies RT and Sputnik were banned throughout the European Union on March 2.
“The systematic manipulation of information and misinformation by the Kremlin is being used as an operational tool in its attack on Ukraine,” said then-EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.
