The German government rules out the possibility of operating the German-Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2, a government spokesman said, responding to related comments by the Kremlin and former chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. Siemens Energy, for its part, emphasized that it has not delivered turbines for Nord Stream 2, but also that the turbine it repaired for Nord Stream 1 has not yet been possible to return to Gazprom.
“Yes, he rules it out,” government spokesman Steffen Hebstreit said on behalf of the chancellor when asked if Olaf Solz still ruled out a review of the decision to abandon Nord Stream 2. Last week, former chancellor Gerhard Schröder, in an interview of Stern had stated that the operation of Nord Stream 2 would solve the problems of supplying Germany and Europe with natural gas, while the Kremlin spokesman Dmytro Peskov had said that Vladimir Putin had spoken about it to Mr. Schroeder during the recent their meeting in Moscow.
According to Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch, the company has not delivered turbines for this particular pipeline, while the Nord Stream 1 turbine that was repaired in Canada and sent to Germany to be returned to Gazprom is still at Siemens facilities. “The turbine is still in Germany. Discussions about whether it can be shipped are ongoing,” Mr Bruch said.
The Russian side cites the problem with the turbine and has drastically reduced the volume of natural gas it sends through the pipeline, while at the same time arguing that in order to receive the component, sanctions against Russia must be lifted.
Mr. Bruch, however, rejected any possibility of legal consequences for his company, as he said Siemens Energy has fully complied with its agreements and can prove that it has done everything to repair and deliver the turbine as soon as possible.
