A particular edition, with many fears and some surprises: the Berlin Film Festival (10-20 February 2022) recounts today’s times like a mirror, under the guidance of the president of the jury M. Night Shyamalan. Women triumph: the Golden Bear goes to the Spanish film Alcarras written and directed by the Spanish Carla Simon and the Silver Bear to the French Claire Denis for Avec amour et acharnement (The Both Sides of the Blade). Juliette Binoche collects her Lifetime Achievement Award as Emma Thompson presents Good luck to you, Leo Grande with great irony, crawling on the stairs of the event instead of posing on the photocall and giving the audience that touch of lightheartedness they need these days.
The Italian presence at the Berlinale is important: Paolo Taviani, for the first time without his brother Vittorio, and his own Farewell Leonora (the only tricolor title in competition) instead won the FIPESCI critics prize with the following motivation: “Guided by the free spirit of Pirandello’s genius, the director mixes poetry, melancholy, but also irony, imagination and joy to tell us the mysteries of life, of death and memory “. The film, in cinemas from today 17 February, traces the surreal adventure of the ashes of Luigi Pirandello who is given a worthy burial after fifteen years.
Dario Argento, on the other hand, returns to the scene with Black glasses (from 24 February in Italian cinemas), accompanied on the red carpet by his daughter Asia Argento, in the double role of actress and producer, and by Ilenia Pastorelli, protagonist of the horror film that tells the troubled story of a woman persecuted by a stalker. Sara Serraiocco, on the other hand, was part of the jury of Shooting Stars Awardthe award dedicated to the younger generation of artists.
The event in the German capital confirmed the indie soul, with few stars and many social projects. Alcarras tells about the daily hardships of peach farmersreduced to their knees by the agricultural crisis and therefore easy prey for exploitation.
German Rabiye Kurnaz against George W. Bush, awarded for best screenplay and best performer, received an excellent reception. Once again it is a fresco in strong colors and taken from a true story: a Turkish mother fights to save her son deported to Guantanamo without charge.
