In a message via Twitter, Silvio Berlusconi, president of the Forza Italia party and former prime minister of Italy, clarified that he “never met the Russian ambassador in Rome and had no contact with him”. This is, essentially, a direct response to an article in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, in which reference is made to an alleged meeting between Berlusconi and the Russian ambassador to Italy.
According to the Rome newspaper, “Cavaliere” is reported to have underlined that the Russian diplomat “explained to him that the invasion was necessary because there was a risk of Ukraine attacking Russia”.
The former Italian prime minister, however, denied the report and the Forza Italia party added that “this is a clear statement by President Berlusconi, which definitively closes the whole matter”.
