Starfield was unveiled at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase. The game was given a full 15 minutes, it was personally introduced by Todd Howard, head of Bethesda Game Studios. The audience was shown the gameplay, character and ship customization options, planetary exploration, skill system, combat and many other features of the space RPG. In general, it all boiled down to the fact that this is the largest and most ambitious project of the studio since Skyrim. That’s just one concern, because of which the expectations of gamers may not come true.
More than 1,000 planets from hundreds of star systems will be available in Starfield. Bethesda promises that each of them will be different in the number of cities and resources, and players will be able to land anywhere on each of these planets to explore and search for artifacts. It would seem perfect, but PC Gamer senior editor Wes Fenlon thinks 990 planets would be boring as hell. On them, players will not see anything special, except for a pile of large stones and rocks. During the presentation, Bethesda decided to focus on the location where the research laboratory and the shelter of the enemy are located under the uncomplicated name “Pirate”. One hand-crafted city was also shown, and it really looks like a true sci-fi utopia. This is a location that will be really interesting to explore, but how many of them are there in the game?
Apparently, Bethesda specifically created 10 interesting locations, while the rest are simply generated in order to just wander around, get artifacts or fight space pirates. The worst thing to discover is that 99% of the time it will be another boring planet. Starfield’s aesthetic feels more down to earth and less colorful than what No Man’s Sky has been doing for years. For example, in Morrowind, the map area is approximately 24 km². It can be completed in an hour, but each location is unique and memorable. In Oblivion, Bethesda increased the map size to 57 km², but it was already a normal and dull fantasy world. As for a space exploration game, Starfield didn’t show anything that really caught the imagination. Generated planets that everyone has seen before, and firefights, like in Mass Effect 15 years ago.

Let’s just hope that Bethesda has something really cool in store for next year, or maybe the game will be pulled by exciting stories and dialogues. But for now, the main idea behind Starfield seems to be just to give gamers something big. The game will be released on PC and Xbox in early 2023.
