A study by UK gym chain PureGym analyzed and listed the 20 most challenging destinations for human fitness. With two locations in South America appearing on the list, one of them being Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, which appeared in 17th place. The first position went to Flørli Stairs, in Norway, the largest wooden staircase in the world.
The research analyzed 70 tourist attractions that require a good level of physical fitness to be fully enjoyed. For example, to visit some places, it is necessary to climb huge stairs or steep slopes. This, then, increases the level of difficulty of venturing into the place.
Researchers arrived at the result by calculating the relationship between the number of steps needed to get to the location, the total elevation and the average temperature during the day, giving an “effort” score to each destination.
The Norwegian staircase received a score of 76/100 — 100 being the highest possible number. After all, visitors have to climb 4,444 steps to reach the top, which is about 740 meters above sea level. The views are of the mountains and the Lysefjord in southwest Norway.
In addition to Christ the Redeemer, which offers a 2.5 km trail to reach the top of Corcovado and received 31/100 points, a destination in Colombia made it onto the list of the most physically challenging: Guatape Rock . In 13th place, the place is a rock 220 meters high and, to get there, you need to climb 649 steps.
However, overall, the Europe dominated the ranking . Among those that appear on the list are Park Güell, in Spain; the Moorish Castle, in Portugal; Monolithos Castle, in Greece. Countries such as the United States, Japan, Australia, India, Romania, and Jordan also entered the ranking.
