Bhutanese royalty celebrate 10 years of wedding (and we love them more and more)

Bhutan is “the happiest country in the world” and today it is even more so. Because the beloved rulers – the thirty-one year old Jetsun Pema and its king, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, 41 years oldcelebrate ten years of marriage. An event also celebrated on the social profile of the royal house with four new portraits (see gallery above) of the spouses, considered i Kate Middleton e William dell’Himalaya. Because they are the young face of the monarchy, they married the same year as the British and theirs is a beautiful love story.

Ten years apart, Jigme fell in love with Jetsun when she was only 17. The two begin a secret relationship, but she wants to fly to London to study International Relations, Psychology and History of Art at Regent’s College. Jigme pleases her: she feels she has found a soul mate, even if it is a bourgeois. In 2011, Jigme can’t wait any longer, so she agrees to marry him. “Many have their own idea of what a queen should be like: extraordinarily beautiful, intelligent, graceful. It matters to me that as an individual she is a good human being, while as a queen she is ready to serve her people and her country.. I found my queen and her name is Jetsun Pema », the king let Parliament know when announcing their wedding.

It was October 13, 2011 when Jigme he took the bourgeois to the altar Jetsun transforming it into youngest queen in the world. It was a wedding of a thousand and one nights: the wedding celebrations lasted three days and involved the whole country. And the “Dragon King”, immediately after the “yes”, made a memorable gesture: although the law of Bhutan allows polygamy, he solemnly swore that he would give up the right to take other wives. “I chose her and she alone”. The couple’s firstborn, the heir to the throne Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, was born in 2016. Then in 2020 the sovereigns gave their people another good news: the birth of their second child, Ugyen Wangchuck, who has just turned one year old.

Jigme and Jetsun are very popular in the kingdom at the foot of the Himalayas. Due to their contemporaneity and openness in a country that, according to the Constitution, favors the Fil, the gross internal happiness. But also for harmony and serenity that they transmit to the people also through the images posted on their official Instagram profiles. Like last August, when, accompanied by their five-year-old eldest son, they participated in the country’s first parade with the female soldiers. Even among military uniforms, bayonets and marches, the family-sized royals managed to convey all their serenity and the solidity of their union.
