In an interview with BET News recorded on Tuesday (16), President Joe Biden said that while concerns about his age and physical fitness are “legitimate,” he is in better physical shape than his rival Donald Trump. He also said that such concerns should be put aside if he can show his “ability to compete.”
“But I understand why people say that. Look, I’m only three years older than Trump, right? And I think I’m in a little bit better physical shape than he is. But the point is, it’s not unreasonable for people to say, ‘Wait a minute, you’re 81.’
Biden further told Bet News’ Ed Gordon: “And so I think it’s a legitimate thing about race and as long as I can demonstrate that it’s not affecting my ability to compete and my ability to get things done, my ability to literally lead the world.”
Gordon then pressed Biden on whether he would be willing to be a temporary transitional candidate and, if he wins in November, evaluate his health and fitness annually in the second term.
“As a practical matter, yes, but there’s no reason to think that’s going to happen,” Biden responded.
Biden was also asked about Trump’s vice presidential pick, J.D. Vance. Biden praised him as a hard-working senator but said he believes he is a “very, very conservative MAGA Republican.”
