The President of the United States, Joe Biden, and the Republican pre-candidate, Donald Trump, present themselves to voters in the primaries this Tuesday (23) in the state of Pennsylvania, one of the last tests of enthusiasm before the general elections in November.
Pennsylvania, with 19 delegates out of the 538 in the Electoral College, is one of the main disputed states in the 2024 presidential election, which should be a rematch between Biden and Trump.
In 2020, Biden won Pennsylvania by less than 1.5 percentage points, or about 80,000 votes. Trump beat Democrat Hillary Clinton in the state by less than 45,000 votes in 2016.
Both already won their parties' nominations at the beginning of March. Still, the two have been visiting the state in recent weeks and focusing on the general election rather than Tuesday's vote. Biden was born and spent part of his childhood in the state and, for decades, has been a fixture in the politics of neighboring Delaware.
Muslim and Arab-American voters are mounting the “Abandon Biden” campaign in Pennsylvania to protest the president’s handling of the Gaza crisis. Biden faced similar efforts in other swing states such as Arizona, Wisconsin and North Carolina, with the biggest show of dissatisfaction coming in the Michigan primary.
Organizers in Pennsylvania aim to get 40,000 “uncommitted” write-in votes. The results of this protest are not expected to be released this Tuesday, as they will have to be written manually.
Pennsylvania is home to a sizable Arab-American population, but also one of the largest Jewish populations, behind only New York, California, Florida and New Jersey, according to a report on the U.S. Jewish population published by Brandeis University.
Although Trump's former Republican primary rival Nikki Haley remains on the Pennsylvania ballot, voting is restricted to registered Republicans and blocks independent voters who favored Haley during her candidacy.
However, any substantial result from Haley would show that a portion of the party remains dissatisfied with the former president, who is currently on trial on 34 criminal charges in New York.
