the president of USA, Joe Biden, and the leader Chinese, Xi Jinping, agreed in a virtual meeting to consider the possibility of promoting arms control talks, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Tuesday (16).
Biden e Xi agreed to “evaluate the beginning of moving the discussion on strategic stability forward,” Sullivan said in reference to concerns over China’s missile buildup.
“You will see multiple levels of intensifying this commitment to ensure that there are safeguards against this type of competition, so it doesn’t stray down a path of conflict,” Sullivan said in a Brookings Institution webinar.
Sullivan did not elaborate on what form the stability discussions might take, but went on to say: “This is not the same as what we have in the Russian context with the formal strategic stability dialogue. This is much more mature, and it has a much deeper history. There is less maturity in this in US-China relations, but the two leaders discussed these issues and now it’s up to us to think about the most productive way forward.”
The United States has repeatedly asked China to do as the Russia and participate in a new arms control treaty.
China says its arsenal is small compared to other countries. The Chinese government says it is ready to conduct bilateral strategic security dialogues “on the basis of equality and mutual respect.”
Monday’s virtual meeting was the deepest dialogue between the two leaders since Biden’s arrival in the US government in January.
