Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived in Indonesia on Monday for a long-awaited meeting with US President Joe Biden ahead of a G20 summit marred by tensions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The two leaders are due to discuss the nuclear ambitions of Taiwan, Ukraine and North Korea, issues that will also hover over the G20, which opens on Tuesday (15) without the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will represent the Russian president at the G20 summit – the first since Russia invaded Ukraine in February – after the Kremlin said Putin was too busy to attend.
On the eve of the meeting with Xi, Biden told Asian leaders in Cambodia that US lines of communication with China would remain open to avoid conflict, with difficult negotiations almost certain in the coming days. He arrived in Bali late on Sunday.
Relations between the superpowers have hit their lowest level in decades, marked by rising tensions in recent years over a range of issues ranging from Hong Kong and Taiwan to the South China Sea, trade practices and US restrictions on Chinese technology. But US officials said there had been quiet efforts by Beijing and Washington in the past two months to repair ties.
“These meetings don’t happen in isolation, they are part of a very sustained process,” said a Biden administration official. “We engaged in serious and sustained diplomacy.” “I think we are pleased with the seriousness that both sides have brought to this process.”
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told reporters the meeting was “intended to stabilize the relationship between the United States and China and create a more certain atmosphere for US businesses.” She said Biden was clear with China about national security concerns regarding restrictions on sensitive US technologies and raised concerns about the reliability of Chinese supply chains for commodities such as minerals.
