Biden announces measures against the spread of firearms

The Democratic president is expected to announce measures within the day in order to limit the spread of firearms, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki announced on Wednesday.

The government has not commented in detail on the measures Joe Biden intends to promote. However, according to the news website Politico, the US president is going to sign executive decrees imposing restrictions on the sale of certain types of weapons.

“The president will have more to say tomorrow (today, Thursday)”, said Ms. Psaki during the briefing of the accredited authors.

Framed by his administration’s Justice Minister, Merrick Garland, Biden is expected to announce restrictions on selected “ghost” weapons, which are either improvised, or have no serial numbers, or both.

The American president, has long been a supporter of arms sales restrictions, had promised during his election campaign that he would take initiatives in this field. The series of recent mass shootings, violent incidents with the use of firearms that have many victims, have increased the pressure on the White House to take action.

Following the killings in Georgia, then in Colorado, Biden called on Congress to ban the sale of assault rifles and pass legislation to better verify buyers’ historical and criminal records. Nevertheless Democrats’ marginal majority in both houses of the US parliament complicates the passage of bills on the issue, which continues to deeply divide American society.

Implementing restrictive measures by signing executive decrees will allow him to move faster.

In 1994, still a senator, Mr. Biden was involved in the passage of a law banning assault rifles. But that measure lasted only ten years and could never be renewed after 2004, given the resistance put forward by Republican lawmakers, who see it as contrary to an American constitutional right.

In 2020, more than 43,000 gun deaths were recorded in the United States, including suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

Many Americans are still clinging to their weapons and even rushed to buy more from the new coronavirus pandemic, even more so when major anti-racism protests began in the spring and after tensions began to rise around the election in the fall.
