Biden backs deal that will allow Finland and Sweden to join NATO, US official says

President Joe Biden supports a deal that will allow Finland and Sweden to join NATO and has played a behind-the-scenes role in the Nordic countries’ negotiations with Turkey, a senior US official said on Tuesday.

Turkey dropped its opposition to Finland and Sweden joining NATO in time for the alliance’s annual summit in Madrid. The official, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity, said Biden spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about NATO on Tuesday at the request of both nations.

The official said the agreement will allow for an expansion of the 30-member alliance and will mark “a significant change in security posture.”

Turkey did not insist that its demands for advanced American warplanes be included in the negotiations, the official said. Biden and Erdogan are expected to meet on the sidelines of the summit on Wednesday.

Biden, who is in Spain to attend this week’s NATO summit, congratulated the countries on the agreement.

Through his Twitter account, Biden said: “Congratulations to Finland, Sweden and Turkey on the signing of a trilateral memorandum — a crucial step towards a NATO invitation to Finland and Sweden that will strengthen our Alliance and enhance our collective security — and a great way to start. the Summit”.
