Biden calls Putin a ‘war criminal’ again after images of Bucha

On Monday, US President Joe Biden called the atrocities committed by Russia and President Vladimir Putin in Bucha, Ukraine, a “war crime” but said it was not genocide, adding which is considering further sanctions on Russia.

“You may remember that I was criticized for calling Putin a war criminal. Well, the truth is that you saw what happened in Bucha”. This guarantees that he is a war criminal. But we have to gather the information,” Biden said of the investigations and new measures against Russia.

“We have to keep providing Ukraine with the weapons they need to continue the fight and we have to get all the details so this can be real – to have a war crime trial. This guy is brutal and what is happening in Bucha is outrageous and everyone has seen it,” Biden told reporters upon landing in Washington.

Asked whether the crimes committed in Bucha justify the genocide situation, Biden told reporters: “No, I think it’s a war crime.”

Biden also said he was “seeking more sanctions” and would announce them soon.

Russia denies being responsible for the massacre in the city and sees a campaign of disinformation and lies by Ukraine. According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the chronology of events and images of the city does not support the Ukrainian version. The Kremlin claims Russian forces left the city days before the bodies turned up.

The American president had already called his Russian counterpart a criminal on other occasions, generating reactions from the Kremlin but also from allied countries.

For French President Emmanuel Macron, “adjectification” of Putin is not the best way: “I am talking to him, trying to stop this war.”
