Biden’s campaign says Vice President Kamala Harris is ready to face JD Vance on the debate stage, moments after the Ohio senator was announced as former President Donald Trump’s running mate.
“Vice President Harris is prepared to debate JD Vance. We have accepted CBS News’ offer to participate in that debate and we feel very comfortable,” Biden campaign spokesman TJ Ducklo said on a call with reporters in response to a question from the CNN .
The Biden campaign previously accepted proposed dates of July 23 or August 13.
The Trump campaign has not yet accepted the invitation, according to CBS News.
The Democratic campaign argued that Harris is well positioned to draw contrasts with Vance.
“There’s a clear contrast and an important vision that the vice president has been making every day — and they both do it on the road, but we can do it in a debate as well,” said campaign chairwoman Jen O’Malley Dillon. She added that Vance is “a rubber stamp for Donald Trump.”
Progressive Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a key Biden campaign surrogate, praised Harris and has high expectations for a Harris-Vance matchup.
“She’s strong. She knows what she’s talking about and she won’t give an inch. And she wins the argument,” Warren said, pointing to Harris’s positions on Social Security and Medicare, health care, economic issues and labor unions.
“The debate will have two parts: how strong our vice president is and how good her economic issues are. I look forward to that debate,” she added.
