Biden congratulated Colombia’s left-wing newly elected president

US President Joe Biden on Tuesday congratulated Senator and former rebel Gustavo Petro, who won the second round of Sunday’s presidential election in Colombia and will become the first left-wing president in Andean history in August.

Mr Biden spoke with Mr Peter and said he was “looking forward to working with the president-elect to continue to strengthen bilateral co-operation”, especially on tackling climate change and implementing the 2016 peace agreement with the former president. FARC guerrilla organization, according to a White House press release.

They also discussed “bilateral co-operation on security and the fight against drugs”.

The US president congratulated “the people of Colombia” for holding “fair and free elections and reaffirmed US support for Colombia”, according to a statement from his office.

Mr Petros, 62, was elected to the presidency on Sunday, promising to bring “change” to the Andean country in crisis.

In the United States, several Republican elected officials, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSadis, have said they are alarmed by his election victory and the emergence of what they call a “totalitarian ideology of the left.”
