The Biden administration is considering grants to help fund expanding access to emergency contraception as a possible response if the Supreme Court reverses the 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationally, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. this Wednesday (4).
“What we’ve done so far… where we’ve seen restrictions… has created, for example, an extreme need grant value, which provides funding to expand access to emergency contraception,” Psaki told reporters at a news conference.
A draft Supreme Court decision, leaked on Monday, showed that most justices are preparing to reverse Roe v. Wade of 1973 that protects the right to abortion. The court confirmed on Tuesday the authenticity of the leaked document.
President Joe Biden appealed to voters to protect the right to abortion by supporting candidates who defend it in the midterm elections in November.
Donations to abortion clinics and activists increase
Abortion clinics and abortion rights activist groups have received a high volume of donations since the leak of a draft U.S. Supreme Court decision that showed judges apparently ready to reverse the historic Roe v. Wade from 1973.
The draft generated a wave of donations from Americans to abortion clinics, groups that help people pay for abortions, and organizations that want to preserve access to abortion.
Beneficiaries include national organizations with large operating budgets as well as small, independent clinics and regional groups that are often overlooked.
NARAL Pro-Choice America, a nonprofit that received $12.9 million in donations during fiscal 2021, saw a 1,403% increase in donations in the 24 hours following the news release compared to the previous day, spokeswoman Kristin Ford said. 51% of donors were helping for the first time.
Between Monday night and mid-Wednesday, more than 4,000 donors sent more than $100,000 to the Abortion Care Network, the national association of 150 independent US abortion clinics. It was the biggest wave of donations in such a time span as the association has ever received.
The money will go directly to clinics to help them stay open to provide reproductive health services, even if state law prohibits them from having abortions, said Network executive director Nikki Madsen.
