Joe Biden criticized special counsel Robert Hur for putting in his report that the president did not remember when his son Beau died, in a reference to the American president's apparent memory lapses.
The report said investigators discovered that Biden's “memory was significantly limited” during interviews with a writer and an interview with Hur's office last year. According to the report, Biden – during the 2023 interview – did not remember when his son Beau died, nor the years he was vice president.
“How the hell dare he say that? Frankly, when they asked me the question, I thought to myself, it was none of their business,” Biden said in comments at the White House on Thursday (8).
Biden began to say that he had worn his son's rosary every day since he died, but stopped, appearing to choke.
“Every Memorial Day, we hold a service in honor of him, attended by friends and family and the people who loved him,” Biden said, after a pause. “I do not need anyone. I don’t need anyone to remind me when he passed away.”
He then reiterated that when he met with the special advisor he was, at the same time, managing an international crisis.
Asked later if he felt his memory had gotten worse, Biden replied: “My memory is good.”
“Look at what I’ve done since I became president,” Biden said. “None of you thought I could pass any of the things I went through. How did this happen?
One of the reporters asked how bad Biden's memory was and whether he could continue as president. Visibly irritated, Biden responded: “My memory is so bad that I let you speak.
Confusion with the name of the president of Egypt
President Joe Biden, minutes after defending his memory, mistakenly referred to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as the president of Mexico when responding to reporters' questions about hostage negotiations and humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.
“Initially, the president of Mexico – Sisi – did not want to open the door to allow humanitarian material to enter. I spoke to him. I convinced him to open the gate. I talked to Bibi about opening the gate on the Israeli side. I have been pushing very, very hard to bring humanitarian assistance to Gaza. There are many innocent people who are starving. Many innocent people are in trouble and dying. And this has to stop.”
