US President Joe Biden defended Israel this Monday (20) at a Jewish American Heritage Month event at the White House. Biden said Israeli forces were not committing genocide in the war against Hamas in Gaza and rejected criticism from pro-Palestinian protesters.
“What is happening in Gaza is not genocide. We reject that,” she stated.
At many of his events around the country, Biden has been the target of protests from pro-Palestinian activists, who have labeled him “Genocidal Joe” for his support of Israel.
In remarks at the White House event, the president emphasized his view that Israel has been the victim since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas in the south of the country, in which 1,200 people were killed and hundreds were taken hostage.
He said U.S. support for Israeli security is “unwavering.”
“We stand with Israel to eliminate (Hamas leader Yahya) Sinwar and the rest of the Hamas members. We want Hamas defeated. We are working with Israel to make this happen,” he added.
Negotiations between Israel and Hamas have stalled in an attempt to win the freedom of sick, elderly and injured hostages still held by the militants, but Biden has promised not to give up.
“We’re going to get them home, we’re going to get them home, rain or shine,” Biden said.
The president also called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, something he reiterated in his graduation speech at Morehouse College on Sunday (19).
This Monday (20), the American leader rejected the decision of the International Criminal Court prosecutor to request arrest warrants against the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his head of Defense for alleged war crimes.
The ICC prosecutor also said he had requested arrest warrants for Hamas chief Sinwar and two other leaders of the group.
In recent months, Biden has faced increasing political pressure from his own party over his handling of the Gaza conflict, as the Palestinian death toll has risen to more than 35,000 people, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. Gaza, and Israel's siege has created dire humanitarian conditions in the territory.
