US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday (15) that the “only answer” to the conflict between Israel and Hamas is “a two-state solution that is real” – and warned Israel that occupying Gaza would be a “big mistake”.
Biden told reporters after his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco that he had communicated that position to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“I have made it clear to the Israelis, to Netanyahu and to his war cabinet – that the only answer here is a two-state solution that is real,” the American leader said.
“We have to get to the point where we can discuss the issue and not just focus on Hamas. I can’t say how long (the war) will last, but I can say it won’t end until there is a two-state solution,” the president added.
United States position:
Biden has long endorsed a two-state solution to decades-old tensions between Israel and the Palestinians. During a speech in Tel Aviv last month, the American president said he supported this negotiation in the search for peace.
“Nations of conscience like the United States and Israel are not measured only by the example of power. We are measured by the power of our example, and that is why, no matter how difficult it is, we must continue to seek peace. We must continue to follow a path so that Israel and the Palestinian people can live in security, dignity and peace,” he said.
“To me, that means a two-state solution,” he added. “We must continue working towards greater integration of Israel with its neighbors. These attacks have only strengthened my commitment, determination and my will to do this.”
