Biden demands from Damascus the release of journalist Austin Tice

Joe Biden demanded yesterday that Syria ensure the release of American journalist Austin Tice, who was kidnapped in Damascus ten years ago.

“We know for certain that he is being held by the Syrian government,” the US president said in a press release issued by his administration on the tenth anniversary of his abduction. “We have repeatedly asked the Syrian government to work with us to bring Austin home,” he continued.

“On the tenth anniversary of his abduction, I call on Syria to put an end to this case and help us bring him home,” he added.

Mr Tice, a former soldier turned journalist, “went to Syria to show the world the reality of war”, the head of state noted, assuring that the return of American hostages was a top priority of his administration. “This is the commitment I have made to the American people and to the parents of Austin, and I am determined to honor it,” he added.

Little information has been released since the Aug. 14, 2012, abduction near Damascus of Austin Tice, then 31. The journalist and photojournalist worked independently and had worked with the McClatchy Group, the Washington Post, CBS, AFP and other media outlets.

He appeared on video in September 2012, blindfolded. However, who his captors are remains unknown to this day.
