Meeting with him Recep Tayyip Erdogan had the American president Joe Biden on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Brussels.
According to Reuters, the Turkish president said after his first meeting with his American counterpart that their conversation was productive and honest and that there are no problems between the two countries that can not be resolved.
Speaking at a news conference on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Brussels, Erdogan said the “extended talks” with Biden covered co-operation on regional issues and stressed his long-standing friendship with the US leader.
According to Erdogan, Biden told him he might visit Turkey.
According to APE-MPE, Erdogan said that he conveyed to Biden Turkey’s position regarding the purchase of the Russian S-400 missile system but also the issue of American F-35 fighters, of the US program from which Ankara was excluded.
On Afghanistan, Erdogan said he conveyed “clearly” Ankara’s view and that Turkey will continue to talk to the Taliban. He added that he considers US support in the economic, logistical and diplomatic spheres very important, if requested by the Turkish forces not to leave the country. Turkey has said it is willing to take over the security of Kabul International Airport.
Referring to his earlier meeting with French President Emanuel Macron, Erdogan said he had conveyed that Turkey and France could work together in Syria and Libya.
According to a Bloomberg reporter, Joe Biden in his first statements spoke of “a good meeting” but refused to mention anything else. In fact, when asked by another journalist to repeat what he said because it was not heard well, the American president replied that he did not say anything.
After press held outside the Biden-Erdogan meeting for over 90 minutes, we went in.
Biden said it was a “very good meeting” and declined to speak beyond that.
We thought he may have, and @JonLemire said we couldn’t hear. “I didn’t say anything,” Biden said.
