Biden-Erdogan talks at NATO summit on Wednesday

LAST UPDATE: 16.45

US President Joe Biden and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan are scheduled to meet tomorrow on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Madrid, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said today.

“We believe that at some point tomorrow the ‘two men’ will have the opportunity to talk,” said a US official on the US presidential plane, adding that details of the meeting were still being prepared.

Sullivan assured that the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, which Washington is eager for Washington and which Ankara is threatening to block, “will be discussed”, but without being “the main object” of the discussion.

The American presidential plane carrying the American president landed at Madrid at 16:04 Greek time. Biden had left Germany, where he attended the G7 summit.

The US adviser also stressed that the US will make “concrete announcements” tomorrow, Wednesday, during the summit on new commitments for long-term military aid by land, sea and air in Europe, especially in the eastern part of the continent.

He stressed that “certain nations” of the Alliance would also “pledge to increase their defense contributions to NATO’s east wing”.

Biden has announced that he will hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yol on the sidelines of the NATO summit.
