Biden government wants to reclassify Yemen's Houthis as a global terrorist entity

US President Joe Biden's administration is expected to reclassify the Yemeni militant group, Houthis, as a global terrorist entity amid continued attacks in the Red Sea, a source told CNN on Tuesday (16).

In 2021, the Biden administration removed the Houthis from the Global Terrorist Group list, following the classification made by the Donald Trump administration. The Houthis are also no longer listed as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

At the time, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the decision to remove the group's designations was driven by concerns that it could jeopardize its ability to provide crucial assistance to the people of Yemen, who are embroiled in civil war.

Blinken said it was “a recognition of the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen.”

Both designations trigger an asset freeze, but only one of them — the Foreign Terrorist Organization — imposes immigration restrictions on members, according to the State Department.

The Global Terrorist Group classification also does not impose sanctions on those who provide “material support” to the group.

Pressure has grown on the administration to enforce the designations as the Iranian-backed militia carries out attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

Last week, the United States and the United Kingdom launched strikes against Houthi targets in areas controlled by the group in Yemen.
