Biden-Lapid phone conversation about Iran’s nuclear program

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid had a telephone conversation today with US President Joe Biden about the negotiations concerning the Iranian nuclear program, his services announced.

The two leaders “discussed at length negotiations on an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program,” their “commitment to stop Iran’s progress toward a nuclear weapon” and Iran’s regional influence, according to the statement. issued by Lapid’s office.

“In this context, the prime minister underlined the importance of the strikes ordered by President Biden in Syria,” added the Israeli statement, which noted that Lapid and Biden agreed on Israel’s right to “self-defense.”

In Washington, a White House official said President Biden told Yair Lapid during their phone call that the US would not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon, amid talks over a possible deal on Iran’s nuclear program as Tehran is demanding stronger guarantees from Washington to revive the 2015 deal, which Israel strongly opposes.

“The president underscored the U.S. commitment to never allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon” in the phone call in which Biden and Lapid also discussed “threats posed by Iran,” the White House said.

Biden also highlighted the importance of completing negotiations on the maritime border between Israel and Lebanon, the statement added.

Israel is waging a “last-minute” offensive to try to persuade the West not to renew the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the 2015 international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, from which the US under Trump withdrew three years later.

Western powers must “stop” negotiating because a deal would allow Iran to earn “billions” of dollars and “destabilize” the Middle East, Prime Minister Lapid said last week during a meeting with foreign press in Jerusalem. .

After Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz and the prime minister’s national security adviser, the head of Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence service, is expected to travel to Washington next week to discuss the issue of Iran’s nuclear program.

Israel fears that the lifting of economic sanctions against Iran as part of a deal over its nuclear program will allow the Islamic Republic to increase its support for regional allies such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah, Palestinian Hamas and armed pro-Iranian elements in Syria or Yemen.

The US military said last Thursday it had killed four pro-Iranian fighters in 24 hours in eastern Syria, during an operation aimed at preventing Iran-backed armed groups from continuing to attack its bases in the region.
