US President Joe Biden will meet today in Washington with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trindade and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, at a time when there is no shortage of friction between the “three friends”, whether it is about trade or immigration.
The American president thus restores the so-called “Summit of the leaders of North America”, also known as the “Summit of the Three Amigos” (of the “three friends”), which was abandoned by his predecessor, Donald Trump.
During the meeting, the United States, Mexico and Canada “will reaffirm their ties” but also “pave a new path of cooperation” in various areas, the White House said.
Biden wants to boost American industry, something that could deprive Mexico or Canada of opportunities.
The American president will first receive Trintos (at 20.15 Greek time) and then the Lopez Obrador (at 22.00) while the tripartite meeting will follow.
The three leaders will discuss issues related to pandemic control, economic competitiveness, climate change and immigration, an issue of particular concern to Mexico and the United States.
The change of tone, however, is unquestionable, after the tumultuous Trump presidency. The Republican billionaire negotiated a major free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico, but the construction of the wall on the southern US border has damaged relations with the Mexican government. And as far as Canada is concerned, his relationship with Trinto was notoriously difficult.
