United States President Joe Biden said on Monday (13) that Gaza City’s main hospital, Al Shifa, must be protected.
Biden also said that he hopes there will be fewer intrusive actions there and reiterated that “there is an effort to pause this for the release of hostages, something that is also being negotiated with the help of Qatar.”
The American leader’s statement was given to reporters during an event in the Oval Office of the White House, amid the advance of Israeli tanks near the hospital gates.
Al Shifa has become the main target in Israel’s battle to take control of the northern Gaza Strip. Doctors at the scene claim that patients, including newborns, are dying due to a lack of fuel to allow the hospital to operate.
Ashraf Al-Qidra, spokesman for the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry, said more than 30 patients, including three newborns, had died in the past three days because of the hospital siege and power outages.
