Joe Biden spoke with Volodymyr Zelensky and assured him that the US will send a new package of military aid to Ukraine to deter the Russian invasion. “We will stand by your side, period,” the US president told his Ukrainian counterpart, ahead of their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington. Zelensky said they were to discuss how to achieve a just end to the war with Russia and called for a second peace summit to be held later this year. The first meeting, to which Russia was not invited, was held in Switzerland last month. It is noted that the 32 NATO member states announced that they would offer Ukraine F-16 fighter jets and air defense systems arrays, even before the official start of the Summit. The multi-role fighters “will bring closer” the “just and lasting peace”, Zelensky said.
