The US President is in Brussels for a second day today to attend the EU-US Summit, which is the first since 2014.

“America returns to the world stage”, stressed ο Charles Michel, welcoming the American President. “We are very happy to work with you to meet all the important challenges,” he added, according to the Athens News Agency.

“We are honored to have you here,” said Ursula von der Layen.. “The fact that you are visiting us so early in your term of office shows your personal interest in Europe and we appreciate that,” he added. The Commission President also noted that the last 4 years have not been easy, the world has changed dramatically, as has Europe, and assured President Biden that the EU is looking forward to working with the United States.

There are three key issues at the EU-US Summit, which is expected to last no more than two hours: ending the coronavirus pandemic, boosting transatlantic trade and addressing global and regional foreign and security policy challenges. In this context, the Beijing challenges and the threatening attitude of Moscow are expected to be discussed. According to diplomatic sources, Joe Biden wants the support of Europeans against China and Russia. Most importantly, however, it wants to show that the US and the EU are united against Moscow in order to put maximum pressure on it.

At the end of the Summit there will be a joint EU-US statement followed by a press conference by the President of the European Council and the President of the Commission.

Prior to his meeting with the EU leadership, Joe Biden, along with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, had a formal meeting at the palace with Belgian King Philippe and Prime Minister Alexander de Croix.

The American President is expected to leave Brussels at around 3 p.m. (local time) and will travel to Geneva to meet with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
