Biden outlines agreement with Israel for humanitarian pauses in Gaza

In a series of posts on the social network X, formerly Twitter, this Thursday (9), President Joe Biden described the daily humanitarian pause agreement with Israel.

The agreement allows the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza and safe passage for civilians seeking to flee the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The US president wrote that his administration is “doing everything in its power to increase aid delivery and humanitarian assistance,” citing the aid trucks already successfully delivered to the war-torn region.

National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby said the Israelis “are fully committed” to the pauses and will notify civilians living in northern Gaza where to seek safe passage using humanitarian corridors.

“This could help reduce the number of civilian casualties by giving people the confidence and time to move away from danger and not find themselves in the crossfire between Hamas and the Israel Defense Forces,” Kirby said.

Read a transcript of Biden’s tweets:

“Starting today, there will be two humanitarian crossings that will allow people to flee hostile areas in Gaza. And they have already allowed thousands of people to reach safety.

We are also doing everything we can to increase the provision of aid and humanitarian assistance. There were 96 supply trucks two days ago and 106 trucks yesterday. But we need to see more, and soon. Our goal is at least 150 a day, every day.

Let me be clear: Israel makes its own decisions. They are fighting an enemy integrated into the civilian population, which puts innocent Palestinians at risk. They have an obligation to distinguish between terrorists and civilians and to fully comply with international law.

These breaks will help move civilians to safer areas away from active fighting. They are a step in the right direction. You have my word: I will continue to defend civilian security and focus on increasing aid to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza.”
