Biden rally for abortion rights has protests over Gaza

US President Joe Biden attacked Republicans for their efforts to restrict abortion rights in a speech in Virginia on Tuesday, but his comments were repeatedly interrupted by people protesting his policies toward Israel.

On the same day that people were voting for a Republican presidential candidate in New Hampshire, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke in a battleground state on abortion, an issue proven to drive voters to the polls to oppose conservative measures. .

“The person most responsible for taking away this freedom in the United States is Donald Trump,” Biden said of the former president and current candidate for the Republican presidential nomination.

The US Supreme Court, with a conservative majority made possible by three justices who joined the court under Trump, in 2022 overturned the Roe vs Wade decision that guaranteed women's right to abortion in the country.

The crowd cheered Biden, but it wasn't entirely friendly. Multiple interruptions forced Biden to pause or attempt to speak amid chants of “Ceasefire now,” “Genocide Joe” and other insults, over his support for Israel and its attack on Gaza following a surprise Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 last year.

Israel's attacks have killed more than 25,000 people, according to Palestinian health officials.

Biden's embrace of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is costing him the support of young voters and other war opponents who could play a key role in the 2024 election, especially in swing states like Michigan.

“They are deeply sorry,” Biden said after some of the first protesters were ushered out of the auditorium. As other attendees continued to heckle, Biden continued to speak and warned the audience that constant interruptions would follow and that they had clearly been planned. His supporters in the audience chanted “Four more years!” to stifle the provocations.

Biden drew loud applause from the audience when he promised to veto a national abortion ban if Republicans managed to pass it in Congress. His rally came after Virginia Democrats secured a majority in the state Legislature after making abortion a central campaign issue last year.

Biden and Kamala kicked off a series of events Monday to highlight Democrats' policies on abortion and what they describe as Republican threats to those rights.

Most opinion polls, including a Reuters/Ipsos poll in July, show that a majority of U.S. voters oppose presidential candidates who favor strict limits on abortion. All seven statewide ballot initiatives to enshrine reproductive rights since 2022 have been successful, including in conservative Ohio, Kansas and Kentucky.
