Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has called US President Joe Biden’s decision not to run in this year’s presidential election “wise” and “responsible.”
“I think he made the most sensible and correct decision. He prioritized his family, his health and realized that at this age and with his weakened health he could not take the reins of his country and a presidential candidacy,” Maduro said at a campaign rally in the Venezuelan state of Barinas.
For the Venezuelan president, “political and economic groups pressured Biden to maintain his candidacy at all costs.” He classified the announcement of his withdrawal as “a responsible move” and wished the American a long life.
“I just say, President Biden: rest assured with your conscience, because you made the wise and correct decision. And from Venezuela, I, the President of the Republic, wish you health and a long life, President Biden. With our differences, but we are Christian and humanist men,” he commented.
Maduro also stated that he knows Biden and that, since the American took power in January 2021, the two governments have maintained “permanent dialogue”.
Despite constant friction with the US, mainly due to sanctions applied against the Venezuelan oil industry and against Chavista officials, the Venezuelan government recently announced the resumption of dialogue commissions between the countries.
In his speech to Biden, the Chavista took the opportunity to talk about his own physical health, at 61 years of age. “To be president you need to be in excellent health. I take great care of myself. I prepare myself. Every day I run three kilometers,” said Maduro, simulating a run on stage.
The Venezuelan president’s main opponent in the July 28 elections, Edmundo González, is 74 years old, and Maduro questions the candidate’s energy to govern in his speeches.
