Biden-Sanchez agreement on hosting Afghan refugees at two military bases in southern Spain

Joe Biden and Pedro Sanchez agree that two military bases in the south Spain can be used to receive Afghans who have worked for the US government.

In a 25-minute telephone conversation yesterday, Saturday night, Biden and Sanchez agreed that the military bases at Moron de la Frontera near Seville and Rota near Cadiz could be used for refugees from Afghanistan until arranged to travel to other countries.

“Pedro Sanchez and Joe Biden have agreed to use Moron and Rota bases to host Afghans working with USA “while they will be waiting for their transfer to other countries”, the Spanish government states in its announcement today.

“I just had a constructive conversation with President Joe Biden in which we discussed a number of issues of common interest, particularly the situation in Afghanistan and cooperation between our governments to evacuate people from that country,” Sanchez said in a message to Twitter.

A plane carrying 110 Afghan refugees and their families arrived last night at an EU Afghan reception center in Spain located at a military base outside Madrid. Among them are 36 people who worked for the US in Afghanistan.

The base is used to house Afghan refugees who have worked for European institutions and their families, who will then be relocated to other EU countries.
