Biden says Assad’s fall in Syria is a “moment of risk and opportunity”

President Joe Biden detailed this Sunday (8) some steps that the US will take after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria and the seizure of power by rebel groups.

In a speech at the White House, Biden pointed out that the scenario offers a “moment of risk and opportunity”.

“It is a moment of historic opportunity for the suffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country. It is also a time of risk and uncertainty,” said the Democrat.

“As we all turn to the question of what comes next, the United States will work with our partners and stakeholders in Syria to help them seize an opportunity to manage risk.”

Biden pointed out that the US will support the Syrians with help from Jordan, Lebanon, Israel and Iraq, “if any threat from Syria arises during this transition period”.

Also this Sunday, US forces bombed Islamic State targets in Syria. According to a US official, the airstrikes targeted “leaders, agents and camps”.

The incursions were also confirmed by the US Central Command (CENTCOM). In a statement, the organization stated that the attacks aimed to ensure that the Islamic State did not take advantage of the current situation in Syria.

“Battle damage assessments are ongoing and there are no indications of civilian casualties,” a US government official said.

According to Biden, the US will prioritize efforts to prevent the resurgence of ISIS in the region.

Biden noted that these efforts include securing detention centers where ISIS fighters are being held as prisoners, as well as a “dozen precision strikes” in Syria against ISIS.

Biden also noted that the US will engage with Syrian groups to establish a transition from the Assad regime “to a new independent and sovereign government”.

“The United States will do everything we can to support them, including through humanitarian aid, to help restore Syria after more than a decade of war and generational brutality by the Assad family.”

Despite the signal, the Democrat pointed out that the US “will remain vigilant” with the rebel groups operating in the country.

“We have taken note of statements from the leaders of these rebel groups in recent days, and they are saying the right things now, but as they take on greater responsibilities, we will evaluate not just their words but their actions,” Biden said.

One of the main rebel groups leading the offensive, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has been designated by the US as a terrorist organization.

In 2017, the FBI offered $10 million for information on HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani.

The U.S. State Department’s flagship national security bounty program continues to offer the bounty.

Abu Mohammed al-Golani, also known as Muhammad al-Jawlani, was the commander of the Al Qaeda (AQS) franchise in the Syrian civil war.

Today, he is the best-known of Syria’s triumphant insurgents, having gradually risen to prominence since cutting ties with al Qaeda in 2016.
