US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that Hamas repeatedly raped women and mutilated their bodies during the October 7 attack on southern Israel, citing survivors and witnesses.
Speaking at a political fundraiser in Boston, Biden said reports of “unimaginable cruelty” had been shared in recent weeks.
“Reports of women being raped — repeatedly raped — and their bodies being mutilated while they were still alive, of women’s corpses being desecrated, of Hamas terrorists inflicting as much pain and suffering as possible on women and girls and then murdering them.”
The president called on international organizations, civil society and individuals to condemn sexual violence “without exception”.
Israeli police are investigating possible sexual crimes committed by some of the few hundred people they arrested after the October 7 attack. Israel’s Justice Ministry said “the victims were tortured, physically abused, raped, burned alive and dismembered.”
In a statement on its Telegram channel, Hamas said it denounced Biden’s “attempt to falsely accuse” its fighters of committing sexual violence and rape on October 7.
The Islamic group said Biden joined Israel’s efforts to cover up war crimes in Gaza, committed with US support, and to mislead public opinion.
Israel held an event at the United Nations in New York on Monday, focusing on sexual violence against women during the October 7 attack. The country has criticized the world body’s response to the attacks.
