Biden says he has no confidence in peaceful transition of power if Trump loses

US President Joe Biden said in an interview with CBS News on Wednesday (7) that he has no confidence that there will be a peaceful transition of power if former President Donald Trump loses the race for the White House in November.

Biden pointed to comments from the Republican nominee that suggested the only way he could lose was if the election was stolen from him.

“If Trump wins, no, I’m not confident at all,” Biden said, before correcting himself. “I mean, if Trump loses, I’m not confident at all. He’s serious, we don’t take him seriously, he’s serious, all this stuff about if we lose, there’s going to be a bloodbath, it’s going to have to be a stolen election.”

Earlier this year, Trump warned that losing the 2024 election would be a “bloodbath” for the U.S. auto industry and the country — comments that Biden and his campaign quickly seized on, claiming the former president was inciting political violence.

Biden also warned that Trump was preparing to contest the election results again in November, as he did in 2020, including by deploying local election officials sympathetic to him.

“Look at what they’re trying to do now in the local precincts where people count the votes — elected officials, they’re putting people in places in the states where they’re going to count the votes, right?” Biden said.

“You can’t love your country only when you win,” the US president added.

Biden’s full interview is set to air on CBS on Sunday morning (11).
