Biden says he is working to get Israel to significantly reduce its presence in Gaza

The American president Joe Bidenresponding to protesters chanting “Ceasefire now,” said today that he was working to persuade the Israeli government to scale back its attacks and “significantly reduce” its presence in Gaza.

Several protesters calling for a cease-fire in Gaza, interrupted Biden's speech at a historic African-American church in Charleston, in the American South, where white supremacist Dylann Roof killed nine people — a pastor and eight African-Americans — in 2015, in one of the worst racially motivated massacres in recent years in the US.

“I understand their passion”Biden said, referring to the protesters when security men escorted some of them out of the church as others chanted, “Four more years!,” endorsing the Democratic candidate for a second term in the White House.

I quietly worked and am quietly working with the Israeli government to get them to significantly reduce (their presence) and leave GazaBiden said.

If you really care about the lives lost here then you should call for a truce in Palestine“, shouted a protester.

The American president, an ardent supporter of Israel, has so far refused to call for a truce in Gaza, believing that this would mainly benefit Hamas. The US administration is however trying to achieve a de-escalation in Gaza and prevent the conflict from spreading to Lebanon.

Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas, the Islamist movement that controls the Gaza Strip, after its unprecedented attack on Israeli soil on October 7 killed 1,140 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP count based on in the Israeli reckoning.

Nearly 250 people were kidnapped and taken to Gaza, of whom nearly 100 were released in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners in Israel during a truce in late November. A total of 132 are still being held hostage by various Palestinian armed organizations.

Israeli shelling of the Gaza Strip has claimed the lives of at least 23,084 people, mostly women and children, according to the latest tally announced today by Hamas, which has been described as “terrorist organisation» from the USA and the European Union.
