During the State of the Union address on Thursday (7), the President of the United States, Joe Biden, pointed out that he will not “demonize” immigrants, but called for action against the crisis on the border with Mexico.
“I will not demonize immigrants by saying that they are poison in the blood of our country. I will not separate families. I will not ban people because of their faith, unlike my predecessor,” he said, referring to Donald Trump’s comments and policies.
The issue of immigration is one of the main points, if not the main point, of the 2024 presidential campaign. With the number of people trying to cross the border breaking records, Trump uses the issue as a political cudgel.
In this Thursday's speech, Biden again asked Congress to approve a bipartisan package on actions to combat this crisis.
“This project would save lives and bring order to the border”, he highlighted, stating that the text would give the president emergency authority to close the border when the number of immigrants is “overwhelming”.
The measure was blocked in Congress after a request from Donald Trump to his party colleagues. “My Republican friends, you owe it to the American people to pass this bill,” warned Biden.
