President of the United States, Joe Biden, said this Friday (31) that the guilty verdict in Donald Trump's trial in New York proved that he is “not above the law”.
The Democrat said that Trump has the opportunity to appeal the decision at his criminal trial in New York.
“Now he will have the opportunity, as he should, to appeal this decision, just as everyone has this opportunity. This is how the American justice system works,” Biden said.
The American leader added that it was “reckless” and “dangerous” for people to question the validity of the jury's verdict and the US criminal justice system.
“It’s reckless, dangerous and irresponsible for someone to say this was rigged just because they don’t like the verdict,” he said.
“Our justice system has endured for almost 250 years and is truly the cornerstone of America, it should be respected. We should never allow anyone to destroy it,” he added.
The White House statement was Biden's first public comments on the trial verdict, handed down on Thursday (30).
Biden declared that Donald Trump's conviction at trial reaffirmed “the American principle that no one is above the law.”
The Democratic candidate also commented that the jury was made up of ordinary Americans, “12 people just like you”, who heard the evidence and gave a unanimous verdict.
“This jury was chosen the same way all juries in America are chosen,” Biden said, adding that Trump’s lawyers were part of that process.
“After careful deliberation, the jury reached a unanimous verdict that they found Donald Trump guilty on all 34 criminal counts,” he said.
