US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday (10) that members of NATO, the Western military alliance, must increase their industrial production to keep up with Russia’s manufacture of weapons and ammunition.
“We cannot allow the alliance to fall behind,” Biden warned at the opening session of the bloc’s summit.
He added that all NATO members are committing to expanding their industrial capacity.
“We will be able to produce more critical defense equipment more quickly. And we may need it,” the US president stressed.
Biden says the new manufacturing pledge sends a message to the world that “every NATO member is committed to doing its part to keep the Alliance strong.”
Furthermore, the leader stressed that “we can and will defend every inch of NATO territory, and we will do it together.”
Draft statement
A draft communiqué prepared for the alliance meeting said its members intended to provide Ukraine with at least 40 billion euros in military aid next year, but fell short of the multi-year commitment that NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg had sought.
The draft, seen by Reuters news agency, also strengthened NATO’s previous language on China, calling the country a “decisive enabler” of Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.
He also highlighted that Beijing continues to pose systemic challenges to Euro-Atlantic security.
