Biden says Supreme Court set ‘dangerous precedent’ on immunity

US President Joe Biden on Monday night (1st) criticized the Supreme Court’s decision on Donald Trump’s presidential immunity in comments from the White House. The move was seen as a victory for his Republican rival.

The decision is likely to further delay the former president’s trial on federal criminal charges of trying to overturn the 2020 election results.

“This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America [Estados Unidos],” Biden said, adding that no one is above the law. With the Supreme Court’s decision, he said, “That has fundamentally changed.”

Biden has been sharply critical of his rival’s actions in connection with the January 6 storming of the US Capitol by Trump supporters who believed false claims that Trump had won the 2020 election.

Biden, 81, was making his first remarks at the White House since the debate CNN against Trump last week led to calls for him to step down as the Democratic Party’s representative in the elections.

After stumbling over his words on the debate stage in Atlanta, the Democrat’s remarks and behavior will be scrutinized for signs that he is up to the task of running for re-election and governing the country for another four years.

Remember the case

The United States Supreme Court released a decision on Monday (1st) determining that former President Donald Trump has limited presidential immunity in relation to acts committed while he was in charge of the White House.

That leaves the Republican able to claim criminal immunity for some of the actions he took in the final days of his presidency — a move that is likely to further delay the trial he faces on federal criminal charges of trying to overturn the 2020 election results.

That ruling — which was seen as the most closely watched case at the court this year — overturns a lower-court ruling by a federal appeals court in February.

That court had concluded that Trump did not have immunity for alleged crimes he had committed during his presidency to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Trump celebrates: “Great victory for the Constitution and democracy”

The decision was quickly welcomed by Trump, who called it a “huge victory for our Constitution and democracy” in a post on Truth Social.

The former president’s legal team says it believes it is possible that special counsel Jack Smith’s case into alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election is now completely undermined.

That would be because any communications Trump had with then-Vice President Mike Pence or Justice Department officials could be considered official, preventing them from being presented at trial.

The team also noted that this could even help Trump in the case investigating confidential documents found at a Trump residence, although initial views do not necessarily mean that is how the legal process will ultimately play out.
