Biden says the US does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court

The United States does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court and there is no equivalence between Israel and Hamas, said United States President Joe Biden on Thursday (23).

International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan has requested an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Khan's decision on Monday (20) was the first attempt to persecute a Western-backed sitting head of state. The action has not yet been reviewed by ICC judges, who can amend, reject or approve it.

Khan said in his announcement that he had reasonable grounds to believe that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's defense chief and three Hamas leaders “bear criminal responsibility” for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The United States is not a member of the court but has supported previous cases, including the ICC's decision last year to issue an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine.
