Biden says US-UK relations are strong, but does not mention Johnson

US President Joe Biden said on Thursday he looked forward to further cooperation with the British government, not to mention Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who announced his resignation amid a scandal.

“The United Kingdom and the United States are our closest friends and allies, and the special relationship between our people remains strong and enduring,” Biden said in a statement several hours after Johnson announced his resignation.

“I look forward to continuing our close cooperation with the UK government, as well as our allies and partners around the world, on several key priorities,” said Biden.

This includes “maintaining a strong and united approach in support of the people of Ukraine,” Biden said.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre mentioned that Biden and Johnson recently met during the US president’s trip to Europe.

The two countries have historically close ties, including a US-led partnership in the invasion of Iraq that has been heavily criticized.

Former US President Donald Trump and Johnson had complementary nationalist beliefs.
