Biden should restrict access to asylum at the US-Mexico border, says source

The United States government is expected to restrict asylum requests at the US-Mexico border through a new regulation that could be issued as early as this Thursday (9), according to three sources with knowledge of the matter, in a measure aimed at to reduce illegal crossings.

The regulations would require that immigrants be assessed at an early stage of asylum screening to determine whether they should be barred and quickly deported, according to the sources, who requested anonymity discussing the administration's internal planning. They added that the measure appeared to be limited in scope.

The immigrants will be screened for asylum bans related to crime and security threats, according to two of the sources.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment at first.

American President Joe Biden, of the Democratic Party, who will run for a new term in the November 5 election, has suffered from record numbers of immigrants caught crossing the border with Mexico since he took office in 2021.

Former President Donald Trump, Biden's Republican opponent, criticized the American president for reversing the more restrictive policies of the Trump Era.
